Among its collection of CES releases, Samsung announced two new entry-level digital cameras in addition to three L-series models on Sunday.

S760, S860 offer ease of use, low cost

The 7.2-megapixel S760 and 8.1-megapixel S860 add to Samsung's current lineup of basic, user-friendly point and shoots.

Both AA-powered cameras come equipped with a 3x (38-105mm) Samsung SHD lens. Updated features are clearly geared toward the basic-use consumer, emphasizing the cameras' face detection technology and a self portrait mode, which prevents the shutter from firing until faces are completely in the frame. Image stabilization is by way of an ISO-raising digital system.

The cameras also offer a Function Description feature, a kind of basic user manual that provides concise on-screen information about various settings and functions. Eleven scene modes and basic special effects accessible via a dedicated "E" button also appear on both models.

Both cameras are expected at retailers this month. Manufacturer's pricing for the S760 is $169, with the S860 commanding a $10 premium for the extra resolution.

L-series cameras offer enhanced features, flexibility

The Samsung 10.1-megapixel L210 and 8.1-megapixel L110 and L100 provide mid-level features in a stylish package.

All three models utilize a high-quality, 3x Samsung NV zoom lens and a 2.5-inch LCD that automatically gains up or down depending on lighting conditions. The higher-tier L110 and L210 also feature Samsung's Optical Image Stabilization technology, in addition to ISO-boosting Digital Image Stabilization (the L100 supports DIS only).

Many of the soft features from the S-series cameras also make there way up to the L models, including the self portrait function, face detection, and Function Description. Advanced video recording features and editing tools on all three L models provide flexibility for movie shooters. The i-movie mode records clips at 800x592, and a Successive Recording feature allows users to pause and resume video filming without saving each clip as an individual file.

The L210 ($269 MSRP) should be available in March; the L110 ($229) and L100 ($199) are anticipated for February release.
