Samsung's new i8 camera/PMP follows in the functional tradition of the company's i85, offering a feature set aimed to combine two pocket-size devices into a single unit.
Styling moves away from the more boxy and nondescript shape of the i85, however, with rounded edges and a slightly smaller form all around. At .8 inches thick, the i8 is small enough to tote easily in a shirt pocket, making it potentially viable as a dedicated PMP substitute.
On the camera side, the i8 offers typical specs for a current compact camera: 8 megapixels, a 3x zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD screen. Key soft features like digital image and movie stabilization, face detection, and automatic red-eye fix round out the package. A Function Description feature provides on-camera descriptions of various functions, making the camera more accessible for novice users.
Using Samsung's included Digimax Converter interface, the device can also store and play audio and video files including MPEGs, AVIs, MOVs, and MP3s. As with other Samsung camera/PMP devices, the i8 has both a 2.5mm headphone output and an external speaker with SRS 3D acoustic technology.
The i8 will hit stores next month. MSRP is $299.
