Nikon Coolpix P5000 Digital Camera Announced

With Nikon's S line getting four new cameras and the L line getting three new cameras, we're left with the single camera update to Nikon's Performance (P) line. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 features 10 megapixel resolution, a 3.5x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD, and plenty of advanced features meant to appeal to the enthusiast or someone who wants a compact camera to take along when they're tired of carrying their "big" camera.

Optical image stabilization (optical VR) provides protection against image blur from camera shake. A new image processing image allows for sensitivities up to ISO 3200.

A new mode dial provides easy access to 16 scene modes, seven movie modes, Anti-Shake mode, and High Sensivitiy mode. The Anti-Shake mode turns on optical VR, High ISO, and Best Shot Selector to make sure you have the best chances to get a blur-free image. From the mode dial, you can also access program auto, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure modes.

A new menu interface provides easy and intuitive access to the camera's features and settings, including four color filters and settings while using optional tele-converters or wide-angle lenses.

As with the rest of Nikon's cameras, the P5000 also has their "In-Camera Image Innovations" which include In-camera red-eye fix, Face Priority AF, and D-Lighting.

As part of the more advanced line of Nikon digital cameras, the P5000 can also accept the 24mm Wide-angle lens Converter (WC-E67) and the 378mm Telephoto Converter lens (TC-E3ED). A built-in accessory shoe supports the use of Nikon's advanced i-TTL flash control for external flashes, including the SB-400, SB-600, and SB-800 Speedlights.

The Coolpix P5000 will be available in March 2007 at a retail price of $399.95.
