Fujifilm IS-1 Infrared Digital Camera Announced

Following the success of the Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro UVIR digital SLR, Fujifilm decided to work on a more affordable option. This effort produced the IS-1 digital camera developed for use in the law enforcement, medical/dental and science fields. The IS-1 features a nine megapixel sensor and is configured to capture infrared light. The IS-1 will be available in limited distribution for $899, starting in February 2007.

A live preview feature and articulated 2 inch LCD aid focusing and reviewing images in low light conditions. The 10.7x optical zoom, 28-300 equivalent lens is fixed to the camera, preventing dust from reaching the sensor, yet allowing investigators plenty of flexibility when getting the shot that they need. An infrared cut or "hot mirror" allows the camera to take visible light pictures "very close" in quality to that of a standard digital camera.

The Super CCD sensor is capable of ISO settings between 80-1600. Paired with Fujifilm's Real Photo Technology, the sensor is able to capture visible and infrared light between 400nm and 900nm.

The included Fujifilm Hyper Utility Software HS-V2 version 3 (what a mouthful) enables photographers to utilize the camera's RAW format. It also allows side by side image comparisons when examining photographic evidence.
