Canon EOS 30D Digital Camera

The Canon EOS 30D is the much anticipated successor to the 20D. The 30D is Canon's mid-range digital SLR, more expensive than the Digital Rebel XT, but less than the Canon EOS 5D. We got hands on with the camera at PMA and loved the feel and construction of the camera (as well as the spec sheet). A body-only price of $1399 puts it $100 less than the 20D, when it was announced. With the 30D now on the market, the 20D will be available for $1299.

Building on the success of the 20D, the 30D features the same 8.2 megapixel APS-C sized sensor, DIGIC II processor, 5 frames per second shooting, and quality construction. Canon has also made some great improvements, including a more rugged shutter, a 2.5 inch, 230k pixel LCD, improved folder management and a new spot metering capability.

The Canon EOS 30D also boasts a 0.15 second start up time and a better way to recover from auto power off mode. Previously, you had to use the shutter release to wake up the camera, but on the new 30D, you can use the Playback, Menu or AE Lock button.

Availability: March 2006 for around $1399 (body-only) and $1499 with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens
