Digital Camera News: Canon Firmware Updates, MS RAW Image Thumbnailer Update, Carl Zeiss Tease

Canon EOS 5D and Canon EOS-1D Mark II N Firmware Updates

Canon has released two firmware updates, one for the EOS 5D and one for the 1D Mark II N.  The EOS 5D update (version 1.0.3) will fix the following:

1. Fixes the phenomenon of large image files (1.7MB) being created.
2. Improves the brightness of the LCD monitor.
3. Fixes an operational abnormality in the AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting.
4. Fixes the mistakes in the Swedish-language MENU displays.

See the EOS 5D Download Library.

The EOS1D Mark II N update (version 1.0.2) has these improvements:

1. Fixes a file-numbering error when shooting in Bulb mode.
2. Improves the brightness of the LCD monitor.
3. Fixes the mistakes in the Swedish-language MENU displays.

See the EOS-1D Mark II N Download Library.

Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer Update

Microsoft has release version 1.0 (build 50) of their RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer add-in.  They've added support for the Canon EOS 5D and Nikon D50, D70s and D200 cameras.

The tool from MS enhances Windows XP by "providing thumbnails, previews, printing, and metadata display" within the Windows Explorer application.  It currently works for most Canon and Nikon cameras.

For more details, go see Microsoft.

Carl Zeiss Tease

The Carl Zeiss website has been teasing folks over the last couple of days.  Currently, when you visit the lens area of their site, you see a banner image saying: "Carl Zeiss Presents ZF!" and that more details are coming on December 28th.  Previously, they had a message stating that "Millions of SLR Photographers Will Soon Discover a New Dimension in Photography."

The most prevalent theory that I've seen is that Zeiss is going to announce that they will be making lenses for the Nikon F-mount.  Also, another theory, rationalized over at Imaging Resource is that Zeiss may be playing on Canon's "EF" line with their "ZF" moniker.
